Idle Echoes

The Accumulation

The Accord meant to take energy out. Something came back through the same channel, and it has been coming back for a hundred years.

The Accord built ten extraction operations and ran them for a century. What they meant to take out was elemental energy, fire and ice and earth and magic and lightning, for weapons, infrastructure and research.

What they did not account for was the other direction of flow.

Extraction pulled energy out of the zones. Something came back through the same channel. Not an equal exchange, not deliberate, not fast. A trace. An echo. The zones began to accumulate memory: of the operations, of the workers, of the combat, of the dead. Every death left a residue. Every battle added weight. Every decade compounded the one before it.

What it is

It is not intelligent. It has no goals. It does not know that Echoes are walking through the zones and it is not hunting them.

It is a force: vast, and purposeful the way a flood is purposeful. It follows the path of least resistance, which is always toward more. More memory, more weight, more echo. The zones are not deteriorating because something wants them to. They are deteriorating because the process has no off switch and has been running without one for a hundred years.

The things that walk the zones are not random, and they were not designed. They are the accumulation pressing the local elemental energy into shapes that reflect what happened there. The dead at Duskfall are impressions of Accord soldiers. The fire in the Ashen Wastes is what remains of a forge that never cooled. The accumulation does not create from nothing. It remembers, and memory, given enough energy, eventually moves.

Resonance was the first symptom

The oldest and most visible sign, and it was documented before anyone had a name for it.

Gear worn through hard combat accumulated the memory of its wearer: their patterns, their rhythm, their presence. When the wearer fell, that memory sometimes transferred. It was measured, written up, and returned marked as measurement error.

A century later the charter has institutionalised it, the registry tracks it, and Echoes trade resonated pieces for their provenance. The thing flagged in the first year of operations is now the headline of the zone economy.

The zones have been doing this since before there was a word for it.

Where it pools

The accumulation is spread across all ten zones and it is not spread evenly. The deepest concentration is in the Eternal Ruin, the site of the original discovery, where all six elemental streams converge. A century of extraction everywhere else fed back, in traces, to the origin.

There it has done something it has done nowhere else. It has crystallised around a single memory: the person who was there first, and did not leave.
